Have you ever heard of Augmented Reality? And if so, have you ever thought about how you can use it in the design field to give a boost to your concept?
We did it, and the result was surprising!
But let's take a step back: what is meant by AR, or Augmented Reality?
AR is a technology that combines real-world elements with digital ones, to create an interactive and immersive experience. Its purpose is to enrich the user's sensorial perception by adding information as well as virtual objects to reality.
Augmented Reality is usually experienced through the use of devices such as smartphones, tablets, smart glasses or dedicated visors. These devices use cameras, motion sensors, and other technologies to detect their surroundings and overlay virtual elements in real time onto the real images captured by the camera.
So how can Augmented Reality put itself at the service of design?
Designers can use AR to view their products in real-world contexts, allowing them to evaluate appearance and dimensions more realistically and, as a result, to experiment with different design options, test materials, colors and textures, or make instant changes. AR can also be used to create interactive three-dimensional models that users can explore and interact intuitively.
Furthermore, during the production phase, it can provide detailed, real-time visual instructions to workers who can follow procedures more precisely and efficiently. For example, an industrial designer can use AR to overlay assembly instructions on a product, indicating step by step how to correctly assemble the various parts.
Lastly, an interesting use of Augmented Reality is in the personalization and branding phase to users. For example, an AR app could allow users to customize virtual objects, such as furniture or accessories, to fit their tastes and preferences.
Technology continues to evolve, opening up to new creative and innovative opportunities. For us at Design Gang, exploring these opportunities and using them to implement our projects, where possible, is a daily goal.
